Madrid-based newspaper ABC dedicates its front page to the intervention of the Moroccan police near the Spanish exclave of Ceuta to prevent a mass crossing attempt early on Sunday. The border between Spain and Morocco was temporary closed after security forces pushed back hundreds of would-be migrants headed towards the village of Fnideq and surrounding areas which abut Ceuta. The movement follows calls on social media to attempt the crossing in the early hours of Sunday.

• Trump safe after second assassination attempt, new details on suspect. After an apparent assassination attempt against Donald Trump in Florida, a 58-year-old man identified as Ryan Wesley Routh was taken into custody. No official charges have been filed yet, but details are emerging of the suspect based on his internet activity, including criticism of Trump and support for Ukraine. Trump was declared “safe and well” on Sunday after Secret Service agents fired at a gunman in bushes near where Trump was playing golf.
• One killed and 40 injured in Russian strike in Kharkiv. A Russian strike on an apartment building in Kharkiv killed one person and injured at least 40, including three children. Meanwhile the Ukrainian Air Force said it destroyed 10 out of 14 Russian drones launched overnight on Sunday. In an interview with CNN, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the situation of his troops in the east was “very tough” and weapons from Western allies were arriving too slowly.
• At last 20 killed in Gaza, Israel admits hostages killed by its own strike. At least 20 people, including children, were killed in Gaza City in the Nuseirat refugee camp and the Zeitoun and Sheikh Radwan districts. The Israeli military admitted that the three Israeli hostages whose bodies were recovered in December were “most likely” killed by an Israeli airstrike.
• EU Commissioner Thierry Breton resigns. Thierry Breton, the European Commissioner in charge of the internal market, announced his resignation on Monday, saying that the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has pressured France to submit another candidate to replace him, “for personal reasons.” Breton published a letter on X calling out the “questionable governance” of the presidency. “It has been an honor” to work as Commissioner for the past five years, he added.
• Javier Milei presents Argentine budget. President Javier Milei presented the 2025 budget to a half-empty Congress on Sunday, vowing to maintain fiscal balance and veto the bills that could threaten it. The President has applied a drastic austerity program since he took office in December, in hopes to rein in chronic inflation in the country, and controls less than 15% of the Congress seats. • Typhoon Bebinca hits Shanghai. Typhoon Bebinca, a category 1 storm, made landfall in Shanghai on Monday morning, the strongest storm to hit the city of 25 million since 1949. Some 1,400 flights were grounded and more than 570 passenger trains canceled, while more than 400,000 people were evacuated and 56,000 rescue workers were deployed across the city.
• "Shōgun" and "The Bear" break Emmy records. The two FX series broke all records on Sunday at the Emmy awards show. The Japanese period drama Shōgun nabbed 18 wins, a record for a one season show, with Anna Sawai becoming the first actor of Asian descent to win Lead Actress in a drama series. The Bear broke its own record of Primetime Emmys won by a comedy series in a single year by taking home 11 trophies, including best lead comedy actor for Jeremy Allen White.

— Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the missile strike fired by the Houthis from Yemen which landed in an uninhabited area in central Israel early Sunday. The leader warned that the attack would trigger a military response, even though there were no casualties. Netanyahu said the strike showed that Israel was in a “multi-front battle against Iran's axis of evil that strives to destroy us,” adding that “anyone who attacks us will not escape from our arms.” In a statement, the Yemeni group claimed that the strike was carried out in solidarity with the Palestinians and that Israel should expect more ahead of the first anniversary of the October 7 attacks.
