In memoriam: U.S. actor James Earl Jones, with a storied stage and screen career including the voice of the Star Wars villain Darth Vader, died at the age of 93; German sculptor and installation artist Rebecca Horn, known for her surreal and sensual “art machines,” died at 80; Frankie Beverly, the lead singer and songwriter of U.S. soul and funk band Maze, died aged 77, and Japanese voice actress Emi Shinohara, famous for her roles in the original Sailor Moon anime series and in Naruto, passed at 61.

France’s first lady makes cameo appearance in Emily in Paris. Netflix has released new episodes of its hit series, with an appearance by Brigitte Macron, the wife of France’s president Emmanuel Macron, as herself. This scene in season four is “a wink,” said the series’ lead Lily Collins. The 71-year-old first lady and former teacher had played herself on screen in the 2018 French comedy series Vestiaires.

Taylor Swift endorses Kamala Harris as “steady-handed” leader. Moments after the end of the U.S. presidential debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump, the singer released a statement in an Instagram post, in which she said she would vote for Harris. Swift said she felt the need to be transparent on her voting decision after an AI image of her falsely endorsing Trump was posted on his website. “The simplest way to combat misinformation is with the truth,” the singer wrote.

Billboard integrates South Korea’s BTS in “Greatest Pop Stars of the 21st Century” rankings. The K-pop band secured the 19th spot of the magazine’s list, whose entries are gradually revealed. BTS “took K-pop to new global heights, and set the standard for high-level hitmaking and fan devotion over the past decade of pop music,” Billboard wrote, noting the band has notched six Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hits and six Billboard 200 No. 1 albums in the U.S.

Australia plans to ban social media for anyone under 14. The country’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said he “wants kids off their phones and on the footy field,” and that his government is considering setting a minimum age limit for children to use social media, citing concerns about mental and physical health. The announcement sparked backlash from digital rights advocates who feel this could impinge on young people’s right to expression and drive dangerous online activity underground.

• New French Prime Minister Michel Barnier said he will form a government, two months after the snap legislative election called by President Emmanuel Macron. The 73-year-old conservative and former Brexit negotiator said he would defend some of Macron's key policies, including a tougher stance on immigration. His government will have to navigate a hung parliament and pressure from the European Commission.

• The German government announced plans to extend temporary border control with neighboring France, Belgium, Denmark, Luxembourg and the Netherlands starting September 16. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said the government will work "in close partnership with our neighbors to minimize the impact" on the borders. "We are continuing our tough stance against irregular migration," she said. The plan follows a deadly knife attack by a Syrian asylum seeker last month in Solingen, which brought public and political concern.

• Look up on September 17! The Harvest Moon, the full moon closest to the fall equinox, will experience a slight lunar eclipse, a foretaste of the ring eclipse of the sun on October 2. The name “Harvest Moon” comes from a time before electricity and agricultural machinery, when farmers relied on the moonlight to harvest crops through the night and work more when their cultivations were the most bountiful.
