French sport daily L'Équipe is feeling down this morning, featuring a sorrowful statue in the Jardin des Tuileries near the unlit flying cauldron as it marks the closing of the Olympic-Paralympic season in the French capital. The closing ceremony of the Games at the Stade de France gathered more than 60,000 people who partied to the sound of France's best DJs, as the baton was passed to Los Angeles for the next Olympic Games in 2028.
🌎 7 THINGS TO KNOW RIGHT NOW
• UN rights chief calls on states to challenge Israel’s “blatant disregard” for international law. Ending the war in Gaza was “an absolute and urgent priority”, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk said in a speech at the opening of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva. Nearly 41,000 Palestinians have been killed in the conflict since October 2023, according to Gaza health officials. Meanwhile, at least 16 people died after Israeli air strikes targeted a number of military sites in central Syria, the Syrian state news agency reports on Monday, the deadliest attack since the Iranian embassy compound in Damascus was hit in April. • Venezuela’s González flees for asylum in Spain, vows to continue fight for democracy. Former presidential candidate Edmundo González arrived at the Torrejón military air base in Madrid on Sunday evening after having spent weeks in hiding. The 78-year-old fled into exile following turmoil in the wake of the disputed July 28 elections, in which President Nicolás Maduro claimed victory. Venezuelan officials had ordered González’s arrest just a few days ago, with the government accusing him of conspiracy and of forging documents.
• Death toll from typhoon Yagi rises to 59 in Vietnam. The typhoon, which was Asia’s most powerful storm this year, triggered devastating floods and landslides over the weekend, destroying a bridge and sweeping a passenger bus carrying 20 people into a torrent on Monday morning. Rescue efforts are underway, with at least 24 people still missing.
• Algeria reelects Abdelmadjid Tebboune for second presidential term. Tebboune won Sunday’s election by a landslide with almost 95% of the vote, but election officials reported that out of the 24 million eligible adults, fewer than 6 million cast their ballot. The victory grants the 78-year-old another term to lead the North African nation, five years after pro-democracy protests ousted his predecessor Abdelaziz Bouteflika. • Pope Francis lands in East Timor for historic first visit since independence. Pope Francis arrived in the small Southeast Asian nation, which is the second-most Catholic country in the world after the Vatican, on Monday for the penultimate stop on his 12-day marathon trip through Asia and the South Pacific. Also known as Timor Leste, East Timor is one of the world’s youngest countries, officially gaining its independence from Indonesia in 2002 after a bloody conflict.
• At least 48 killed in fuel tanker-truck collision in Nigeria. The Niger State Emergency Management Agency said the crash between a fuel tanker and a lorry carrying passengers and cattle caused an explosion which engulfed both vehicles overnight on Sunday.
• Sinner becomes first Italian man to win U.S. Open. Jannik Sinner beat American 12th seed Taylor Fritz 6-3 6-4 7-5 in the men’s final on Sunday, winning his second Grand Slam title of 2024 after the Australian Open in January. The 23-year-old Italian world No. 1 shattered U.S. hopes of a first male champion at the majors in 21 years, to instead become the first Italian to win at Flushing Meadows. In the women’s final on Saturday, Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka defeated American Jessica Pegula to win the tournament for the first time.

Shōgun won it all at the Creative Arts Emmys in Los Angeles. The FX series broke the record by winning 14 Emmys (including costumes, makeup, editing, stunts and cinematography), beating John Adams, which had made history with 13 prizes in 2008. The ceremony, held over two nights, awards categories that don't make it to the main Primetime Emmys. The main event, set on September 15, could have the show pad its record with up to five more awards.

“We're all sitting ducks.”
— On NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday, Georgia senator Raphael Warnock urged Congress to pass more substantial gun control after a teenager wielding a military-style rifle allegedly killed two students and two teachers at a high school in his home state. “Any country that allows this to continue without putting forward just common sense safety measures is a country that has — in a tragic way — lost its way,” he added. This year only, 390 mass shootings have been reported in the U.S., three of which happened in schools.
